Monday’s Teacher of the Day: Mark Johnsen from Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (SOCES)
Mr. Johnsen is the band director for more than 300 fifth-through-twelfth grade students at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (SOCES) magnet school.  In this unique configuration, dozens of students stay in the program for seven or eight years, until they graduate.  He has worked tirelessly at the school for 17 years, putting in early-morning and late-night hours to help his students succeed.  One parent noted that many times Mr. Johnsen will e-mail her late into the night and then turn around and e-mail early in the morning (“When does he sleep?”).  There are four levels of bands and two jazz ensembles.  In the program beginners become accomplished musicians ready to play in college.  Several students have gone on to play professionally, including one who is a member of the Marine Corps “President’s Own” stationed in Washington D.C.  Thank you, Mr. Johnsen for the tireless and selfless efforts you make for students!
